Yr 5 Mr Correy
Welcome to Year 5. My name is Mr. Correy and I am the class teacher. Working alongside Year 5 and 6 are Mrs. Frost and Mrs. Thomas. They will helping the children in and out of the classroom with their learning throughout the week.
Our topic for spring term 2 is ‘Gold Rush’. During our history lessons, we will be considering the motives of the Yukon ‘Gold Rush’ prospectors and looking at the hardships they faced on their perilous journey to the Klondike Valley.
In science, we will learn about reversible and irreversible changes, with a particular focus on how materials can be separated and gaining some inspiration from how prospectors panned for gold.
In literacy, we will be reading different versions of the story of King Midas and then writing our own version. We will also make links to science when we write a non-fiction chronological report about how different materials can be separated.
During geography lessons, we will use maps and atlases to plot the journey of the prospectors from Skagway (Alaska) to Dawson City. We will also compare the human and physical geography of Dartmoor with Yukon, Canada.
During R.E., we will look at how Christians celebrate Easter, focusing on themes of sacrifice, salvation, incarnation and Holy Communion.
Just a gentle reminder that children should be reading their AR books every night and quizzing as regularly as possible. It would be greatly appreciated if you could read with your child to help them develop their vocabulary and understanding of the text. Reading diaries need to be filled in at least three times per week and brought into school on a Thursday.
Now we are in year 5, we need to be taking more responsibility for completing any home discovery journal tasks and bringing in our kits on appropriate days.
