Yr 5 Mr Correy
Welcome to Year 5. My name is Mr. Correy and I am the class teacher. Working alongside Year 5 and 6 are Mrs. Frost and Mrs. Thomas. They will helping the children in and out of the classroom with their learning throughout the week.
Our topic for spring term 1 is “The ‘Unsinkable’ Titanic”. During our history lessons, we will be asking the question ‘Who was responsible for the catastrophic loss of life on the Titanic?’. We will look at first hand eyewitness accounts and secondary sources of evidence to try and establish who we think was to blame. In literacy, we will write our evidence and conclusions in a balanced argument. We will also use Michael Morpurgo’s novel ‘Kaspar Prince of Cats’ to inspire our own stories about surviving the sinking of the Titanic.
In science lessons, we will learn about floating and sinking and the different forces involved: water resistance, upthrust and gravity. Also, we will find out about pulleys and levers and use this knowledge to design and make a crane in DT. During geography lessons, we will use maps and atlases to plot the journey of the Titanic. In music lessons, we will use instruments to play part of the hymn ‘Nearer, my God to thee’ – supposedly played by the band as the Titanic was sinking. We will develop our use of shading and perspective in art, as we attempt to sketch pictures of the Titanic. During R.E., we will continue to explore Christianity and what it means for Christians to believe that God is holy and loving.
Just a gentle reminder that children should be reading their AR books every night and quizzing as regularly as possible. It would be greatly appreciated if you could read with your child to help them develop their vocabulary and understanding of the text. Reading diaries need to be filled in at least three times per week and brought into school on a Thursday.
Now we are in year 5, we need to be taking more responsibility for completing any home discovery journal tasks and bringing in our kits on appropriate days.
